An award from your alma mater is one of the highest forms of praise a professional can receive. After decades of volunteer service and professional contributions in the field of public relations, Sarah Thornton, APR was recognized the UNLV Greenspun College of Urban Affair’s Alumna of the Year Award on November 14, 2019.
Sarah joins a prestigious group of recipients of this award. Among those, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, a four-time Emmy® and Screen Actors Guild honoree, government officials, and other esteemed professionals. Sarah was selected to receive this honor for her extensive work supporting local non-profits and advancing the field of public relations.
Graduating in 1996, Sarah earned her bachelor’s in communications studies from UNLV. She worked in the field for 11 years before opening her firm – Sarah Thornton Public Relations. In 2019, she rebranded her firm to Connected Communications as her agency has grown to serve the needs of her clients. Her firm has helped many businesses expand and reach their target audiences. Her team has become highly sought-after experts in real estate and the professional service sector.
Supporting students and fellow alumni have been a passion for Sarah. She served as a volunteer for a variety of activities at UNLV, most notably leading the Denver Chapter of the UNLV Alumni Association for several years. She employs interns from UNLV and frequently mentors new PR professionals. Sarah sits on many non-profit boards, including Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas, Family to Family Connection, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Las Vegas Valley Chapter, and previously served on several other boards.
A thought-leader in the PR community, Sarah has served as president of the Las Vegas Valley Chapter of PRSA and president of both the Las Vegas and Colorado Chapters of the International Association of Business Communicators. Sarah is accredited in public relations by PRSA, a distinction held by only 15 percent of its members within the society’s global membership.
